UTTC Students Create Classroom Mural

Posted: Updated:

School administrators take advantage of summer vacation by sprucing up the school. Normally, maintenance work is done by professional staff, but United Tribes Technical College is taking a different approach.

Two students were hand picked to help create a large art mural for one of the classrooms.

Both Logan and Jacinta both say they're happy they get to leave a massive work of art on camps for possibly years to come.

Jacinta Ducheneaux says she's usually first to get to the work in the morning, and says she loves it.

"Nothing has been like 'Uh!' Everything has been 'Yeah! Let's do it!' because Logan and Wayne they're pretty fun to work with, and we laugh and stuff. Then we get right to work," says Ducheneaux.

Ducheneaux says she had no idea that each summer instructor Wayne Pruse chose students to work with him on major projects. This year he's chosen two rising sophomores.

"Their both really good students. You know, very dependable. Strong work ethic. Their work is good, two very distinct styles," says Pruse.

Logan Maxon says he was also surprised he was chosen, because he had other plans.

"I thought, I'm going to get a summer, but then I heard that I was chosen to do this. Honestly, I would like to stay home, but it is kind of an honor. It's kind of a privilege. So, I thought, you know, this is what I need. I did it. I'm good with it," says Maxon.

Under Pruse's guidance they came up with a proposal, etched out art work and made plans on what the room would eventually look like. The room is for technical programs such as welding and electrician, which are provider jobs.

Pruse used the tribal connection of the buffalo as a provider.

"Now, it's through education. It's relevant to the culture, plus it is the 21st Century," says Pruse.

The students looked to other cultural metaphors, such as feathers, a teepe and symbolic colors.

They estimate that the mural will be complete by the end of July.
