Heitkamp Discusses ND Law Enforcement Issues

Posted: Updated:
It was a packed room Friday morning at Minot City Hall, as Senator Heidi Heitkamp was in town discussing issues facing North Dakota Law Enforcement.

Heitkamp was joined by Senator Tom Carper, Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, as well as law enforcement agencies from across North Central and Northwest North Dakota.  The group discussed major issues including increased drug activity and crime, human trafficking and prostitution, and a lack of staffing and resources.  “My big take away that I want to re-enforce again, you can't just focus on the symptoms of problems, we have to address underlying causes, root causes.  But we can't ignore the symptoms either, and we've talked a lot today about symptoms,” stated Senator Carper.

The group identified the economic boom, and rapid growth as two of those underlying causes.  With so many more people in the state, there aren't enough law enforcement officers to deal with the increased crime and hazy jurisdictional lines.  “We need a workforce here, and as a result of needing a workforce, we've become a target.  As a result of having a huge build-out of opportunity and cash, the criminal element has come in behind and we haven't built-out our federal law enforcement services in a manner that's adequate to deal with that condition,” said Senator Heitkamp.

Heitkamp will include these issues and law enforcement staffing concerns in a three month dialog she'll be having with the Office of Personnel Management.  Tomorrow, Senator Heitkamp and Senator Carper will be in Williston to discuss mail delivery concerns in Western North Dakota.
