Family Focus: Swimming Lessons

Posted: Updated:

The weather is warming up, and so is the pool. Before you know it, your little one will be asking to go for a swim.

“It’s nice to have a base so I know they are safe,” Becky Stroklund says.

She’s talking about swim lessons.

For many kids, those lessons will be the first time they have to do something that requires leaving mom and dad.

It’s a lifelong skill these children will use forever.

As a swim instructor, Mueller says the biggest thing is getting a child to relax in the water. That means lying on their back, head in the water, stomach up, and feet down so they are nice and flat on top of the water.

It’s also important to drown-proof your young one. They should know how to jump in and come to the top of the water, then back to the edge. That way if they happen to fall in the pool, they will be able to get themselves to the top of the water and back to the side.

Kids that have spent some time in the water before usually feel more comfortable at swim lessons.

Mueller says it makes a big difference. Most of the kids that are comfortable in water don’t have anxiety.

Most young swimmers aren’t scared of their face being in the water. It’s actually their ears that bother them the most. By getting them used to water with things like a bath, you could help eliminate that issue.

If you do choose to sign your little fish up for swim lessons, let them know that their teacher is there to help and play.

The final weekend of the state fair is always a big one, with huge crowds. That's why it's important for families to make sure they know what to do if parents and children get separated.
