Barney Steps Into Minot Mayoral Race

Posted: Updated:
Tuesday evening we heard from Kevin Mehrer, a Minot native whose running as a write-in candidate for the next mayor of the Magic City. Tonight, we hear from his opponent Chuck Barney.

Barney, a long-time Minot resident, served 12 years on Minot's City Council. Barney is currently the Director of Minot State's Severson Entrepreneurship Center. When Mayor Zimbelman announced he was stepping down, Barney started looking at major issues facing the city, and felt he could make a difference. In his eyes, those issues are quality of life, flood protection, and growth.

“The way to do that is to focus our economic development activities, not on the oil industry. The oil people are going to come here, this is where the oil is, but what we need to do now is diversify the economy of Minot so that when oil is slowing down, the other industries we've established during the good times can take us into the future and maintain that population base,” says Barney.

Early voting at the Ward County Courthouse continues until tomorrow, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Primary Elections will be held next Tuesday, June 10.
