Authorities Prepare For Attorney General's Visit

Posted: Updated:
The Attorney General's visit generated lots of attention, but behind the scenes lots of preparation went into making sure the visit went off without a hitch.

Seven local, tribal and federal law enforcement agencies are combining to make sure the visit didn't make news for the wrong reasons.

Hours before the Eric Holder's visit began, uniformed officers started staking out positions and securing the United Tribes Technical College campus.

"There are several plans that are in place that should a threat or something occur, we're planned for them. We have anything from extraction and evacuation to and including deadly force if needed," says Maj. Les Witkowski of the Burleigh County Sheriff's Department.

Security was provided for all of the presentations throughout the conference, not just for Holder's speech.

Having local officials involved does add a level element of knowledge that assists in the entire picture. Security for an event like this requires teamwork.

"I think they enjoy coming here because of the working relationship that we have with all our local law enforcement. We all work together really well, and when they come in they fit right in," says Lt. Steven Hall of the Burleigh County Sheriff's Department.

Holder was on the ground in North Dakota for only a few hours, but during that short time lots of officers had their guard up.

Next week, local and federal agencies will work together on security for President Obama's visit to The Standing Rock Reservation.
