President Will Visit North Dakota

Posted: Updated:
President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will visit the Standing Rock Reservation on Friday, June 13.

"We’re eager to visit this reservation, which holds a special place in American history as the home of Chief Sitting Bull. And while we’re there, I’ll announce the next steps my Administration will take to support jobs, education, and self-determination in Indian Country," says President Obama in a statement from the White House.

He says he's going to hear from as many people as possible, ranging from young people to tribal leaders, about the successes and challenges they face every day.

Tribal Chairman Dave Archambault says the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is honored that president Obama has decided to visit the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. He says the tribe believes the President's visit will be the latest dialogue in a vital and continuing conversation about federal-tribal relations.

Scott Davis says tribes have a unique relationship with the U.S. Government.

"Based upon our treaties, the history of our tribes, our land base now, that relationship continues. You know, from time to time, it needs to be strengthened. And I think that's a big reason why I see our President coming out next week," says Davis of the North Dakota Indian Affairs Commission.

Senator Heidi Heitkamp says the President's visit is a milestone for Indian Country and she welcomes them to the state.

Bill Clinton was the last president to visit Indian Country. He traveled to the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1999.

Chairman Dave Archambault's full statement:

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is honored that President Obama has decided to visit the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. The President has shown a strong commitment to Indian Country, whether through Executive Orders strengthening the relationship between the federal government and tribes, or by championing historic legislation like the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013 and the Tribal Law and Order Act. The President's visit demonstrates his Administration's continuing dedication to Native American issues which touch not only the lives of Standing Rock Tribal members, but of Native Americans across the United States. We believe the President's visit will be the latest dialogue in a vital and continuing conversation about federal-tribal relations, and look forward to welcoming the president to our Tribal lands.
