Lightning Destroys Salt Water Disposal Site

Posted: Updated:
A lightning strike caused an explosion in Williams County this week.

The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDH) says the lightning caused an explosion, fire and about 1,200 barrels of salt brine and one or more barrels of crude oil to be released from an Oasis Petroleum site 12 miles outside of Williston.

So far, about 995 barrels have been recovered, and the health department says no brine has reached a nearby intermittent stream. Crews from the NDDH, North Dakota Industrial Commission and the Oil and Gas Division are on-scene for remediation.

The site was completely destroyed in the incident.
