Camp Edventure Kicks Off

Posted: Updated:
Summer vacation is the time many students take a break from school. They stay home, travel, or do anything that doesn't resemble school work, but more than 1,000 Bismarck elementary students are actually going to school for the summer. Bismarck School District's Camp Edventure is underway this year.

Possibly an old stigma attached to summer school was that you had to go if you didn't do well in school. But these kids get to go, and looked happy to be there. One told me she likes camp because everyone gets to read outside.

This summer 60 students are going to Camp Ed at Prairie Rose Elementary. Both teachers and students say they like coming to camp.

"I've really enjoyed it because it's such a fun thing to do with your friends, with all your friends, and you don't always just learn. You get to some fun games with it too," says future fifth grader Michael Geary.

Geary and his camp-mates are working on word mosaics. He says he likes camp because he gets to do more artistic activities like these. Since this is his third year at camp, he says he knows what to expect, but it's never boring. He says, if anything, the camp's helpful.

"You kind of forget all the stuff you learned a little bit. When you're here, you learn a few new things," says Geary.

Being a teacher all year, one would think, summer is the break they look forward to.

"I kind of look forward to just the difference between the school year and Camp Edventure. So, I would do it again," says Camp Ed teacher Angela Nagel.

This is Mrs. Nagel's second year at Camp Ed. She normally teaches special education, but this summer she's the first and second grade teacher. She says her students love being able to read outside.

She also says they're doing a fun project indoors, based off a book they read together, about the uniqueness of their names.

"A lot of parents say how important this is for them, just to keep their kids reading and working with math. And just the socializing part of it too. It's staying in contact with their friends. And the kids really enjoy that as well," says Brenda Beiswenger the director of Camp Ed.

Beiswenger says the days are short, only 4 hours, and teachers try to keep the students as active as possible while teaching reading and math.

Any student, public or parochial, can go to Camp Edventure. It's not just elementary students that are going to school this summer, more than 3,000 students are going back to school for the summer.
