June means summer, and summer means swimming pools and ice cream. In this week's Inside Business Jim Christianson takes us inside the Dairy Queen.
When Mark Weber's family bought the original Bismarck Dairy Queen in 1964, the business was already 12 years old, having opened in 1952 as one of the first Dairy Queens in the Dakotas. Sixty two years later, the iconic store on Broadway remains a local summertime favorite.
"This store does very well during the summer months. Of course its only open for four or five months out of the year. But it does very well."
And the location near Elks Pool and Custer Park is a big part of the attraction.
"The Elks Pool really helps a lot because there again a lot of kids grew up that way where ya hear we went to the pool and then we went across the street to the Dairy Queen."
New ice cream flavors come and go, but Weber says there are certain favorites that will always be on the menu.
"Blizzards will never disappear, because blizzards are on of our main things. Came out in 1985, before that was the peanut buster parfay, banana split type of thing. Those are traditional items that will never disappear."
One of the original and still most popular Dairy Queen items is the Classic Dilly Bar.
"Dilly Bars came out right away. Dairy Queen started in 1948. Dilly Bars have been forever. Hard to keep a Dilly Bar out of a little kids hand because that's an ideal treat for kids."
Weber and his sister own and operate all three Bismarck Dairy Queens, and they have no plans to tinker with the recipe for success at the original Broadway location.
The original Dairy Queen is located at 230 West Broadway in downtown Bismarck, by the Elks Pool.
