Children Travel Around The World With Theo Art School

Posted: Updated:
Summer vacation for many families is the best time to take trips, but sometimes schedules don't match, money gets tight, or people just don't have the time.

Theo Art School has the answer. Art Around the World in 70 Days, through Art Attack, a camp program where children "travel" to different countries each week and learn all about the history, art and culture.

They've gone to the Amazon Rain forest in Brazil. When I walked into the room, it looked as though I had walked into another land.

The instructors say kids like the camp because it's non traditional. For instance traveling to Brazil.

"We will be everywhere from Africa, Madagascar, to Germany and the Netherlands. We have 14 camps this summer and each week we concentrate on a different region of the world," says Art and Education Coordinator Nina Loeks.

They say the kids are given artistic freedom while "traveling" to different countries where they learn about history, food and culture. The kids can paint, draw or use recycled materials to create their own art.

"There's a lot of things you can do with art. You can color, you can draw, you can paint," says camper Campbell Ellenbaum.

The students are painting a giant mural of the rain forest as well as trees that'll stand in front of the mural. The kids say they like being able to try new things.

"I really like painting clay frogs," says camper Jesse Fry.

This is Drew Helten's second year participating in the Theo Arts Summer Camp.

"I came here last year, about mid summer, and I volunteered for two camps. I decided l liked it so I stayed for a couple more camps. Then Liliana offered me a job," says art assistant Drew Helten.

We agreed that lounging around all summer is nice, but being able to do something outside is better.

Drew Helten "It's fun to be a part of what inspires you to be artistic and creative. It helps them do something they like to do," says Helten.

Both campers and the instructors say it isn't just about art, it's also about meeting new people and making friends.

Campers will finish out the week with a completed 3D rainforest and a trip to the Aquatics Center. Next week, they'll be traveling through Latin America.
