Lifeguards Prep For Summer Season

Posted: Updated:
New and returning lifeguards are starting to get their feet wet in preparation for the 2014 outdoor pool season. Forty high school and college students are in training to protect swimmers throughout the summer.

"If something were to happen you going to be ready, you going to know what you're doing," says lifeguard, Dominick Neamewer.

Neamewerhas been a lifeguard for three years. He and all the new lifeguards like, Teagan McIntyre, that will be patrolling public pools have had a week of classroom and in-water training.

"It prepares us for what we actually have to do," says McIntyre. "There's never a situation where you don't know how to handle."
"Being a lifeguard a lot of responsibilities on you shoulder I would imagine each lifeguard will have at least one if not many saves throughout the year," says facilities specialist Dylan Thiem. "As something you you understand you're taught throughout the training course and you take it very seriously so that's an understanding before you take the job."

For many of the students in training lifeguarding isn't just a job. It's something they love.

"I'm excited because it has to do with something that I'm passionate about," says student Jarren Fallgattler. "I'm looking forward to teaching the kids how to swim and hopefully they like it as well."

There are three outdoor pools these lifeguards will be assigned to and they put their training in to use starting Monday.
