Dan's Garden: May 30

Posted: Updated:

Tomatoes are staples of any garden, but they need a little help getting in the ground.

Well, last week on the garden show we planted a lot of cool season crops like lettuce, carrots, radishes and root crops. like. Now that it looks like its safe that it won't freeze anymore, we're going to plant the tender greenhouse started plants. You might have to cover them, but I doubt it. We're almost to June 1.

Maybe the biggest tip I can give you today is if you're going to plant tomatoes or peppers, before you take them out where it could be hot and windy, I like to keep them in the garage. Maybe open the garage door for a day, and toughen them up a little. You could also put them on the eastern or north side of the house so they get a little bit use to the elements. Because when they're grown in a greenhouse, they're really taken care of all the time.

That's what I did with my tomatoes. I've been toughening them up for a couple days, and then today, we planted them. I got my tomato cages on. You want to water them quite well, and then keep your eye on them, especially the first week.

We also planted other root crops that are grown in the greenhouse like these peppers and cucumbers. These grow up a fence. We're going to have a vertical garden, and in between these rows, we're going to have what we call interplanting. We're going to have things growing in between the other plants which we'll talk about on another gardening session.

Its fun to do. Remember, harden them off, and keep your eye on them, especially the first week or two.
