Fizz, Boom, Read Kicks Off Summer Of Reading

Posted: Updated:
It's summer vacation for many North Dakota students and that means rest, relaxation and librarians would like to add reading to that list. The Bismarck-Mandan Summer Reading Program hosted its 11th annual kickoff event at the North Dakota State Library and Heritage Center.

There were balloon animals, face painting, temporary tattoos and special guest readers. And a whole lot of people from all across the state.

One of the Pfennigs' last stops at the summer reading event is the Bookmobile. The ladies checked out several books. They say they love reading and coming to events that support it.

"Well, we always come every year. So, it's nice that we have wonderful weather, and it's a good chance to get out and get something to read and check out all the booths," says Lisa Pfennig.

Children of all ages got their faces painted, won snacks and even befriended balloon animals.

"It's fun and seeing the kids get happy when you give them a balloon. And it's just kind of fun to be out in the sun, I guess," says Olivia Henderson.

Henderson is a volunteer at the Morton Mandan Library and she wanted to support kids this way. We agreed the correlation between balloon animals and books is that they're both fun.

"Reading is fun. That's the bottom line for us. Reading is fun and libraries are fun. A lot of people think that libraries have no place today, but it couldn't be any further from the truth," says State Librarian Mary Soucie.

The program made sure kids saw reading was cool no matter who you are. First Lady Betsy Dalrymple was among the long list of guest readers.

"It's important to kind of encourage kids that there's a lot of things that you can do not just be like glued to the electronic screen," says Carly Pfennig.

Even the Sanford Health Bear supports reading, he was out offering hugs.

Librarians say just because the event is over, doesn't mean the program is.
