Tribal And State Leaders Meet In Bismarck

Tribal communities are facing many of the same issues as the rest of the state.

Tribal leaders met with legislators to discuss important issues impacting tribal communities. Several concerns were on the table, including education, public health and water issues.

"We're doing everything that we can to try to deal with those issues, but we need help! We need help, not just administratively or supportively, but we also need resources as well," says Mark Fox, Three Affiliated Tribes.

The executive director of the North Dakota Indian Affairs Commission says meetings like this one are the best place for legislative discussion.

"It's ongoing for some of the legislative bills we have. It's updates. It's also next steps for some of these bills to be fulfilled come next session. And also, it's to see where the tribes are at, as far as what they're planning for the coming session and what bills they have on the table," says Scott Davis with the Indian Affairs Commission.

Davis says it's important for governments to work together to get the best results.

"I think the biggest thing is to get in line with where our state is at. How do we do that? From economics to jobs to infrastructure, the tribes have the same issues."

He says tribal and state governments are focused on building a closer relationship in the near future.
