Zoo Welcomes Baby Moose

Posted: Updated:

The Dakota Zoo has a new addition. Parents Walter and McKenzie welcomed their baby moose into the world a few days ago.

Zoo Director Terry Lincoln says both mom and baby are doing well, but McKenzie is very protective over her child.

The new moose doesn't have a name yet, because they can't get close enough to determine if it's a boy or a girl.

Lincoln says it's the only captive born moose in the country. And it's not the only new arrival.

"We have some wallabies in the pouch. They're only about an inch long. And so, in about eight months, people will be able to see those popping their heads out of the pouch. We're still waiting for some mule deer and some little monkeys, some tamarins, here and there," says Lincoln.

Lincoln says the moose will be taken to it's new home later this fall.
