Minot PD Offers Critical Course

Posted: Updated:
It can take two to three minutes for emergency responders to get to a scene, and a lot can happen in that time.

That’s why the Minot Police Department is enforcing a safety course to make sure officers have the medical tools to prepare for the unexpected.

From a gunshot to a knife wound, police officers are always putting their lives on the line.

"Just because something has happened to you doesn't mean you have to give up, you can fight through that,” says Capt. John Klug of the Minot Police Department.

While they're protecting you, they also have to protect themselves.

"Realistically when you look at it, across the nation usually there’s more than 100 officers killed in the U.S. every year and that can happen anywhere,” says Klug.

If the unthinkable happens, they need to think fast to save not only their lives, but also their partners.

That's why the Minot Police Department created a critical care course that teaches officers how to think fast when they're knocked down.

"We have role players who will be attacking them or shooting at them, and they have to eliminate that threat and then treat the injuries under that stress,” says Klug.

The classroom is a great learning tool, but close to real life experiences will allow them to know what it’s really like.

"If you train at level one in a classroom setting and you don't make it realistic, when time comes and the stress is added it's likely that they are not going to remember those tasks, but if you can drill those tasks into their head while they're under pressure, it's more likely that they'll remember it,” says Klug.

Each officer is given a pack of medical supplies to treat their wounds until medical help arrives.
