North Dakota Scholarship Available To Students

Posted: Updated:

Students may have put their notebooks and pens away after a busy school year but parents are already thinking about ways to save for next year.

Courtney Sibla is an occupational therapy student at the University of Mary. She says attending a private college, and taking a five year bachelors and masters program, can become costly. That's why she planned ahead.

"I knew about it all throughout my high school career. It was something that the counselors really stressed because they knew the importance of the scholarship. I planned ahead and took classes in order to help me get the scholarship," says Sibla.

Sibla says she knows of students who decided not to apply for the North Dakota Scholarship because they didn't think they'd stay in state for college. But she says it's smart to apply because situations change.

"You have six years to use the scholarship, so you could apply for the scholarship your senior year, defer it for two years, come back to North Dakota and still receive that scholarship for four years," says DPI Director of Teacher and School Effective Matt Strinden.

Seniors can apply for the non-competitive scholarship within the last three months of their high school career. DPI says all students have to do is meet the scholarship's academic qualifications.

"It's a one pager, it takes maybe 10 minutes tops to fill out, and it's worth $6,000. It's a pretty good trade off," says Strinden.

DPI says students should start seeing responses to their applications by July.

Students are encouraged to apply for the scholarship before the deadline, June 6.
