Williston Police Arrest Man For Stealing Mail

Posted: Updated:

For more than a year now Ryan Edwards has been stealing mail from residents of Williston, Bismarck, Mandan and Minot. As a result he was able to obtain birth certificates, checks, social security cards and IDs.

The Williston police department arrested Edwards on Monday after he jumped from the second story window of his residence and tried to run away.

He's being held on a $1 million bond.

Detective David Peterson has some advice on how to protect your mail and identity.

"When somebody is utilizing the mail to send checks, I'd encourage them to use a locked mail receptacle, even if it takes driving the to the post office here in Williston or within the community that they're in," he says.

Peterson also says you should try to learn the habits of your mail carrier, and don't leave items in your mailbox for an extended period of time.
