Dan's Garden: May 23

Posted: Updated:

Now that spring is here its time to start thinking about how to prepare your garden for the growing season.

So, the first thing I always do every year is look at my notes on what grew last year, and I make a nice paper plan so I know what I'm going to plant and where I'm going to put it. Now, already we've rototilled and prepped our garden. We took a broadcast spreader, we put down our fertilizer and our gypsum to keep the ground from packing hard. We put our fertilizer on, about six pounds per 1,000 square feet, and we're read to go. If you haven't rototilled yet, its time.

It is a good time to plant our cool season crops like red potatoes. I plant them pretty thick because I get more potatoes that way. I got them spaced about seven inches apart, and I'm going to make hills out of them. I also have onion sets, lettuce, radishes and carrots. Be sure you water everything in, and you know you might have to water once a day until you get germination to occur. Another thing you can be planting now are the tender crops like tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers that are already started.

Next week we're going to talk about planting rhubarb, asparagus and raspberries, and I will have a few other tips too.
