City Looks To Re-Establish Zoning Ordinances

Posted: Updated:
Did you know that in Minot, if you're living with more than four people not related to you by blood or marriage, you're breaking a zoning ordinance?

After the flood three years ago, many people temporarily took in flood victims who had nowhere else to go. Because of the crisis, the planning department and city council even allowed people to camp on their own front yards for safety reasons.

And, as more people moved into town in the past two years, there was a continued housing shortage, but city leaders say it's finally time to re-establish the zoning ordinance on the books.

"Now that the housing shortage is better, there's quite a few apartments available, there are single family homes for sale more than there were. That housing crisis is to our extent over, and we need to get back to enforcing that regulation," says Minot City Planner Donna Bye.

Bye says the problem with an overcrowded home is often parking. Numerous cars will fill the street or even be parked on the grass.
