Public Works Facility Set To Open This Summer

Posted: Updated:
More people moving into Dickinson means more water lines, more sewage and more streets to clear. It hasn't been easy for the Public Works Department, but a new multi-million dollar facility should help.

The Dickinson Public Works Department consists of three divisions: Streets, sanitation and water utilities. Until now, those groups were in different buildings scattered throughout the city. Now, they're coming together under one roof and city officials say they're hoping this will improve public works' services.

Ask children what their Public Works Department does and you'll probably get a blank stare, but Dickinson students found out just how important their city's department is on Tuesday.

"We're learning about how they can clear the roads and stuff for us, and about our water like our sewage water," says fifth-grader Rasia Mackey.

They received tours of the brand new Public Works facility as a part of National Public Works week.

"We're learning about who actually clears the roads, and we should be thankful for our water and what we have," says fifth-grader Jordyn Peterson.

Thankful because it hasn't been an easy few years for Dickinson Public Works. The city's growth has increased the workload for every division.

"It's an exciting time, but a very challenging time. As the city continues to grow, we have to change and improve our operations," says Dickinson Public Works director Gary Zuroff.

And this new facility is the first step in that improvement.

"This will bring all the Public Works division into one facility, plus it's got a great mechanics shop that will be able to maintain the city's vehicles and fleets," says Zuroff.

The 95,000 square foot plus building should eliminate space concerns for many years.

"It's pretty big. I can't believe all the construction cars can fit in here," says fifth-grader Kami Wert.

The Public Works Department  be moving into the facility after it's finished on July 1.
