FEMA Trailer Deadline Approaches

Posted: Updated:

If you have a FEMA trailer you have 13 days to get it off your property.

Zoning ordinance regulations say that only one living unit is allowed on a property in a single family zoning district, and the unit has to be a permanent structure.

That ordinance was waived following the flood, and now the city says the time has come to move FEMA trailers out of those districts.

It's not only the city that wants the FEMA trailers out, but some neighbors too.

“We do hear from individuals that live next door or down the street from these temporary units. They do indicate to us that it is a very sensitive reminder of what they had to go through. Many of them also lived in their units, and were elated when they finally got out of them and back into a permanent structure,”  says city planner Donna Bye.

A public works and safety commission meeting will be held in city hall on May 28 at 4:15 p.m. to discuss this issue. This brings up the conversations of providing an update or seeing if people need additional help.
