Petroleum Conference Kicks Off

Posted: Updated:
Big oil began setting up at the Civic Center in Bismarck this morning. The 2014 Williston Basin Petroleum Conference is attracting more than 4,000 people and 340 exhibitors.

The Civic Center looked like a boomtown Tuesday, as hundreds of booths were being assembled.

"Our guys here joke that setting the booth together is kind of like putting Ikea furniture together. There's a lot of pieces and not a lot of tools and so you kind of have to get creative," says Katie Haarsager, Enbridge Pipelines.

Participants from almost every state and 20 countries are here to be part of North Dakota's energy explosion.

This is the largest conference that the oil industry participates in.

"We always look forward to participating and seeing everybody, not just from North Dakota, but across North America," says Haarsager.

Even though it takes all day to set up, some companies have been preparing for this event for over a year.

"It's a year of preparations to get ready for the conference. This includes booking hotel rooms, a year in advance, and building a beautiful booth to bring attention to not only our company but to really show the industry well," says Liz Merritt, Nuverra Environmental Solutions.

The Williston Basin Petroleum Conference runs through Thursday. Highlights include presentations on all aspects of the oil industry.

The keynote address will be best-selling author, TV and radio host Sean Hannity of Fox News on Thursday.

This afternoon, two free educational sessions were held so the general public could participate in the event. The registration fees for the conference range from $500 to $700.
