Norwegian Constitution Celebration Held in Minot

Posted: Updated:
Today isn't the 4th of July, but the signing of the Constitution was being celebrated in Minot, just not for the United States.

A big crowd gathered at the Scandinavian Heritage Park to celebrate the Norwegian Constitution, which was signed on May 17, 1814.  The festivities kicked off with a parade around the Park. Men, women and children were dressed in authentic Norwegian clothing, and sang the Norwegian National Anthem. It was a day to pay homage to a culture with strong ties to North Dakota.
"I think there was a lot of immigrants that came to this area from Scandinavia, not just Norway, but from Scandinavia," says Norwegian immigrant, Kari Mahle. "They all settled and they wanted to be close together when they came to a new land, and they settled in this area."
And the celebration continues tonight at the Grand Hotel in Minot with a banquet and dance. That kicks off in just a few minutes at 6:30.
