Senator And Mayor Receive Honorary Degrees With The Class Of 2014

Posted: Updated:
The 2014 Williston State College Commencement Ceremony was held today. It honored graduates who will be moving on to the next phase in their lives. Two honorary degrees were also given out at the ceremony.

A new class of students walked into the commencement ceremony with all of their families and friends watching. This is a special day for many of them, and two men received a special honor today.

After some speeches by students, Lyson was given his honorary degree and then Koeser accepted his.

“We awarded two people who I believe are really key to developing that infrastructure,” says WSC President Raymond Nadolny. “Mayor Ward Koeser and I can't say enough. What Senator Stan Lyson has done in the legislature to support northwest North Dakota is very powerful. So, we've been riding on their shoulders for the last five years and to honor them today is the least that we can do.”

“I just feel extremely honored. I love Williston State College,” says Koeser. “I love what they stand for. I love what they do with our community. For them to recognize me today, makes it a very special day."

“This is really an honor for me to receive this,” says Lyson. “I thank the college completely for honoring me for this.”

The two men are close to retirement, but after receiving their new honorary degrees, the question is what's next?

“At my age, I think I'm done educating,” says Lyson.

“I got my four-year degree, but I still feel very proud to have this,” says Koeser.

Like these two men, the graduates can now move on to the next chapter in their lives. That chapter could be in the workforce or at a four-year university, but the message is clear.

“My message is congratulations,” says Nadolny. “I just wish them so much success. They've been successful here. It is difficult to complete a degree, and for the people who go through that. There's not enough to say.”

After the ceremony was over, each student got to move their tassel over and walk out of the well as 2014 graduates.

Dr. Nadolny says the next step for the college over the summer is more construction.
