Family Focus: Crib Safety

Posted: Updated:

Whether it’s your first or third child, putting your little one down to sleep could make you feel a little nervous. Mother of three Sarah Seay says she still gets nervous, and finds herself wondering if her child is okay and breathing.

Well, at least the crib their sleeping in is comfortably decorated, right?

Turns out those extra toys and blankets you’re buying to fill the crib aren’t really necessary. Actually, they shouldn’t be in there at all. You may be surprised to learn what exactly should be in a crib.

“Really, the answer is nothing except for the child,” says Holly Arnold a parent educator for the North Dakota State University Extension Service.

The least amount of bedding is best. Really, all you need is a snug mattress pad and a fitted sheet, which could prevent suffocation.

It’s not just what’s on the inside that matters. Those rails that line your crib are also very important.

In order to make sure your crib is up to stands, you can do the can test. Make sure a regular sized soda can can’t fit through the slates of your crib. If it can, they are too far apart.

Arnold says a child can wiggle through a space bigger than a soda can, and end up severely hurting themselves. You also want to make sure to keep cords away from the crib. If you’re using a baby monitor, keep it somewhere your child can’t grab it.

It may seem like a lot to take in, but soon enough this will all become second nature.
