On The Farm: Winter Wheat

Posted: Updated:
There's been a lot of questions circling the worth of the 2013-2014 winter wheat crop in North Central North Dakota. Like most parts of farming, it comes down to mother nature.

The Winter Wheat struggles have been a combination of not quite right winter conditions, and a cold spring. Frost levels are slowly working their way out of the soil, which is making it hard for crops to grow. But producers shouldn't give up on the crop just yet, strong commodity prices and droughts in the Southern Plains make North Dakota winter wheat that much more important.

"We're seeing a lot of winter wheat that is just now emerging out of the soil. Our weather conditions are good enough now so that those plants will survive and produce a head and be viable," says Eric Eriksmoen a NDSU Extension agronomist.

With so much uncontrolled, farmers always have backup plans when it comes to their crops. When it comes to winter wheat, if producers are patient, it could pay off in big ways.
