Out of Control Well Sprays Liquids on Site

Posted: Updated:

An oil well that went out of control near Tioga Friday night was finally plugged this morning, but not before making a mess and raising some health concerns.

The Williams County Emergency Manager says a hydrogen sulfide detector went off at the well, which is operated by Emerald Oil. It was spraying oil, gas and other liquids. Most of the liquids were contained on site, but some oil mist sprayed on to another field.

"Right now, it's under control. The well has been plugged off, but that doesn't mean it has been abandoned. Once they determine what the cause of the blowout was, then they'll probably continue to work the well and eventually bring it back into production," says Mike Hallesy, Director of Emergency Services.

The Health Department says the well must be closed in before r inspectors can make a full assessment.
