Cello Rock Band Visits Century High School

Posted: Updated:

Century High School orchestra students heard their formal instruments play a funky beat this afternoon.

The cello rock band "Break of Reality" played for the students and held a musical workshop.

"Break of Reality" is touring the U-S playing benefit concerts for the schools they're visiting.

Like most of us, when naming instruments for a rock band, Layn and Natalia probably didn't say three cellos and a bongo drum.

Layn Siristen, a senior cellist at Century, has been playing for nine years was impressed. He said, "It think it's really cool. They play conventional music, then they also play different."

Sophomore cellist, Natalia Condic, agrees with Siristen,"It inspires me to kind of keep playing and they make cello cool."

They're what make up the rock band, "Break of Reality." Having graduated from the Eastman School of Music and Juilliard, they say music education is a big deal to them.

That's why the group is traveling across the nation, to only 10 different schools, hosting orchestra workshops and benefit concerts to support the school.

Patrick Laird, one of the band members, said "It's exciting working with kids. you know, every few days, we - we're with a new batch of kids and to work with young students and help them think outside the box with their instruments."

The band put out calls across North Dakota to see which school they should visit. They said Century's band jumped out at them with its passion for education.

Siristen continued, "I'm actually trying to go for a music major in college. so it would be really fun to do something like what these guys do and travel around and play."

Condic isn't sure she'll follow in the band's dedication of a musical career. But she is inspired, "I definitely want to keep playing cello. I don't know if this is something that I'd want to do, they're making me think about it definitely."

After the orchestra workshop the band is hosting a benefit concert for the school and the proceeds will go to Century.

"Break of Reality's" goal is to raise more than 50 thousand dollars for musical education across the nation. The band is about 25 days into the tour, and they say they have high hopes to reach that goal.
