Authorities Enforce Minot Fire Code

Posted: Updated:

From patios and decks to balconies and garages, this time of year, grills seem to be everywhere. But, depending on the location, you may get more than just a plate of BBQ ribs.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, there are about 6,500 grill fires each year in the United States.

Under Minot's Fire Code, grills are to be 10 feet away from combustibles, like decks and siding. And, 20 to 25 feet away from openings, like windows and doors.

"Fires generally will start on the grill itself because of poor maintenance in cleaning and then, it will spread to nearby combustibles or what we'll see is the propane will be leaking for a day or so and it will leak into those low spots,” says Minot Fire Inspector Brian Andersen.

If you live in an apartment complex, the fire inspectors will notify the property manager about any grill concerns. Fines vary depending on the property management company.
