Room To Spare

Hotels, hotels, and more hotels. Ever notice how many are actually in the Magic City?

"We're at almost 3,100 hotel rooms which are nearly twice as many as we had about three years ago. So, that's a lot of hotels built in a short amount of time,” says Wendy Howe the executive director of Visit Minot.

To put it into perspective there are roughly 33 hotels in Minot. And, 16 of them were just built in the last two years.

Hotel experts say while their rates have somewhat dropped overall they're doing just fine. The biggest gripe they have is holding onto their staff with the cost of living being so high.

"I have to take a lot of my time to develop staff. They stay for one week or two weeks and then go and then you've got the same training on a continuous basis. A lot of what I hear is people leave because they can't afford to stay,” says Dennis Gumke the general manager at Noble Inn.

So, if you can't keep your employees, that’s going to drive down your business.

"It is a little bit scary that some things could happen at least in reference with the oil in the future. But, I do believe strongly that Minot is going to be a huge part of North Dakota and is a destination city,” says Maria Zafra the general manager at La Quinta Inn & Suites.

Recently, Minot's booming market hasn't quit yet. Shops and restaurants have been popping up just like hotels. And, with more room to grow that means there's still a need for workers.

Right now, hotels are being filled up by construction workers. Once plots of land are built up, what's going to happen to the rooms?

"So, with the current occupancy rate being a little bit lower, it gives our leisure travelers, our sports tournaments, our convention groups more hotel availability which gives us the opportunity to attract those types of events to our community,” says Howe.

Rumor is if you build it, they will come. Or at least they hope so.
