Williston Experiences Child Care Shortages

Posted: Updated:

Gov. Jack Dalrymple has proclaimed May 9 as Child Care Provider Appreciation Day to thank all the providers for their continued quality care and dedication to the children of North Dakota. Unfortunately, in Williston there is a severe shortage of these licensed child care professionals.

If interested, there are a few steps you must take in order to obtain your child care license.

"Providers have to have a fingerprint background check, be certified in CPR and first aid. I come to the home and do a compliance checklist with them and the fire department will make a visit,” says child care licenser Kathy Molland.

Obtaining your child care license comes with many economic benefits for providers.

"It actually helps you out with a lot. You can be on the food program when you're licensed, you can apple for grants when you're licensed. A lot of things like that. You get a lot more assistance. You can actually have two more kids, and then two before and after school kids, so you're basically allowed four extra kids in the summer, that is a total of nine,” says daycare provider Mindy Cabler.

For Colette Sorenson, owner of Country Kids Daycare, her fondest memories of being in the childcare business are witnessing the transformations of the children.

"Watching the kids grow and being able to see them when they grow up. Be there when they graduate, be there when they get married, having babies" said Sorenson.

In Williston, there are less than 40 licensed and self-declared child care providers. For a town that continues to grow, this is not nearly enough.

"I actually get phone calls at least once or twice a day from someone asking me for daycare. I sometimes don't even answer my phone, and let it go to voicemail, because there are people constantly asking me for daycare or drop-ins" added Cabler.

Both women agreed that they have turn away multiple new clients every single day.
