Security Companies Increase Sales With Door-To-Door Tactics

Posted: Updated:

As we approach summer, door-to-door salesmen will be hitting the streets to sell anything and everything to consumers. We take a closer look at the home security market in the Magic City.

This time of year, they're walking up and down sidewalks trying to sell consumers on things like home security systems.

"Well, we thought about getting security, just because of the way things have changed around here," Melissa Marshall a Minot resident.

Like many, Marshall decided to go with a Vivint home security system on the spot.

"One of the Vivint salesman stopped by one day and we talked with him and it seemed like the best route to go," says Marshall.

"We always tell people watch out for high pressure sales tactics and be aware anything you sign could construe a contract," says Dan Hendrickson a coordinator at BBB Communications.

But, for some consumers, Vivint may not be the company they advertise on the internet.

According to the Better Business Bureau, the Utah based company has had nearly 3,000 complaints in the last three years with about 1,000 of those complaints coming in the last 12 months.

The most common customer complaint reported to the BBB was problems with product/service and billing/collection issues.

"The deals that are explained at the door often prove to not be quite exactly what the contract says. People might hear I get a free alarm system from this company, but they don't realize that there's a monitoring service that needs to be activated," says Hendrickson.

People have also taken to social media outlets, like Facebook, to voice their concerns about their home security systems through Vivint.

KMOT did reach out the Vivint and they released this statement, "With a customer base of more than 800,000, the number of complaints are quite small and 100 percent of these have been resolved. Vivint continues its commitment to provide excellent products and customer service."

But, for Vivint customers like Marshall, they say they're satisfied with their services regardless of what others say.

"It's been awesome. No problems once over," says Marshall.

As companies continue to market their products in neighborhoods around the Magic City, the BBB recommends consumers ask for identification and verify the company before signing any paperwork, so you don't become the next victim.

According to the North Dakota Home Solicitation Sales Law, consumers have the right to cancel sales transactions of more than $25, which are made away from a permanent place of business, within three days.
