Inside Business: Oahu Hawaiian BBQ and Sushi Bar

Posted: Updated:

Kobe's Japanese Steakhouse opened in northwest Bismarck a couple years ago, to the delight of area foodies who were craving some sake with their sushi. Kobe’s manager Kiky Rizky says they wanted to take the Asian dining experience three steps further with Oahu Hawaiian BBQ and Sushi Bar.

"Kobe's is a specialized Japanese Steakhouse only. Oahu is an Asian fusion that is a combination. We have Hawaiian, we have Japanese food here, and we have Thai food here. All three combine together," says Kiky Rizky the manager of Oahu.

In particular, they wanted to offer more emphasis on Hawaiian and Thai food.

"We want to bring Thai food here, so we can introduce what real Thai food is all about," says Rizky.

In addition to Japanese food, Oahu is the only restaurant that offers Hawaiian food, and Thai food prepared by Chef Wichia who was born and raised in Thailand.

"My whole life has been dealing with Thai food, so I know everything about it, and I've seen a lot of Thai restaurants that have done very good business and lots of American people that like Thai food," says Wichia a chef at Oahu.

Traditional Thai cooking, like that of Chef Wichia’s mother and grandmother, involves attention to detail, texture and color, as well as multiple flavors enhanced with spices like curry.

While Oahu also offers sushi, sashimi and Hawaiian delicacies, he is most excited about offering the cuisine of his homeland to local residents.

"They had never had Thai restaurants here, so I'm so glad and so proud that they're going to bring my original cuisine here," says Wichia.

Oahu Hawaiian BBQ and Sushi Bar is located at 2626 State St. in north Bismarck.
