Ronald McDonald House Providing for Generations

Posted: Updated:

Terri Klein checked into the Bismarck Ronald McDonald House more than two decades ago when her twin girls were born six and half weeks early.

"It's an emotional time for new mothers when their babies have to be in the hospital and you live out of town," says Klein. "And you want to be as close to them as you possibly can, and the Ronald McDonald House...I stayed here and I was very close to them and it was very comforting."

And now, like Terri, one of her twins checked in after having her baby more than a month prematurely.

"Brought me to Bismarck by ambulance from Dickinson," says second generation mother, Alayna Wolla. "Dickinson can't have babies 36 weeks and under. So they brought us here. I chose St. Alexius because me and my sister were born there, so I wanted the same hospital."

A small infection was discovered in baby Lennon's lungs after he was born, so he has to stay at the St. Alexius NICU until he's recovered.

"It's nerve-racking at first," says Wolla. "You don't know what to expect. You're nervous, your baby is in the hospital, you're stressed."

That's where the Ronald McDonald House comes into play...

"But the first moment we stepped in you're greeted with open arms and smiling ladies," says Wolla. "And they hug you and they offer any support that you need and it's amazing."

The Ronald McDonald House isn't the only place Terri and Alayna have generational ties to.

"We were all here taking care of mom when she was born," says St. Alexius Registered Nurse, Bonnie Cook. "I worked night shift and a lot of the other girls worked other shifts, too. We all have taken care of mom. She was in the exact spot that her son was in, which is very unique."

It's not everyday a mother and daughter can say they've shared an identical life story. But with a little comfort and care, that story has been able to stretch through two generations.
