Comic Book Industry Drawing in New Customers

Posted: Updated:
It's the way the comic book industry draws in more business, but yesterday customers benefited from the promotions too.

Free comic book day is an annual event that takes place on the first Saturday in May. The North American Comic Book Industry uses the day of sales and freebies to bring new customers into independent comic book stores. Participating comic book stores give away specially printed editions of comics to attract new readers, and for some avid comics collectors it's kind of like a holiday.
"It was kind of a big deal," says collector, Jesse Clooten. "We got up early, got our chores done so we could get here specifically today because you get a bunch of free comics and everything is on sale today. Everything, fifty percent off on all the back orders, piggy banks, obviously we got about 70 comic books today."

The first Free Comic Book Day was in 2002.
