Minot Community Helps Sandbag

Posted: Updated:
Fifteen to twenty thousand sand bags. Those were the numbers Rice Lake residents and volunteers were working towards today during a community wide sand-bagging event.

Over the past several years, more than 20 homes around the lake have been lost to rising water levels. And in just the past year, the water level has increased by more than 2 feet. Students from South Prairie school, Minot Air Force Base, and the Minot community came out to support their neighbors to the South.
"Well we continue to fight this battle out here," says Rice Lake Board Chairman, Steve Zaun. "Right now we're just, we dyked all of our lift stations for the sewer system and now we're sand bagging those dykes. We just got done with some more road raises, so we're trying to get those protected from the wind and the water. The Lake rose about two feet over the winter, so that's created a whole new set of problems."
Another big concern is dangerous debris from flooded homes that could float into the Lake.  Zaun says volunteers are always needed around the Lake.  If you're interested in helping out, log onto their website Rice Lake dot com.
