Ag Commissioner Candidates Debate Before Panel

Posted: Updated:
The North Dakota Newspaper Association gathered Agriculture Commissioner and U.S House candidates for debates before a packed room and a three judge panel yesterday.

First up, was Incumbent Republican Doug Goehring who is challenged by Democrat Ryan Taylor for Ag Commissioner. Panelist Mike Nowatzki, asked Taylor the important question of how each candidate will protect the ag industry from the oil boom. Taylor said infrastructure and education are key, and while Goehring agreed that infrastructure is important, he says balance between land owners and oil companies needs to be maintained.

"As Ag Commissioner, we would be advocating for educational dollars to make sure we're at the top of our game, and that they survive after the oil is gone," says Taylor.

"We got a 77 percent success rate of helping to resolve conflicts, collect on damages to look at royalty distributions making sure that our producers, our royalty owners and our service owners are taken care of," says Goehring.

Goehring survived an endorsement challenge from Judy Estenson at the NDGOP Convention in early April, and Taylor was unchallenged for Democrat endorsement.
