Farm Wife Wins Mother Of The Year

Posted: Updated:
Farmers never have a day off, and mothers have the same schedule.

So, it's agreed that if you're a woman who does both, you're most likely overworked and grossly underpaid.

That's why the America's Farmers Campaign for Farm Mom of the Year is looking to give a little support to hardworking moms. From hundreds of entries across the nation, five lucky moms were chosen.

Mandan's own dairy farmer, Jennifer Holle, has been picked to be the Northwest Regional Farm Mom of the Year for the Monsanto Company's America's Farmers Mom of the Year campaign.

Truthfully, Holle was too busy to pay attention to her mother who was collecting facts about her daily life. Part of Holle's routine is to feed the calves, each calf can drink up to 10 liters a day.

All the chores that need to be done don't always allow her time to answer the phone. She explains, "I was actually on a phone conference, so I didn't answer and she left a message. She said gimmie a call back, and when I did she said 'Congratulations! You won the Northwest Region for Farm Mom of the Year.' I was floored and shocked," says Holle.

The campaign, annually picks women from each region of the country to best represent hard working farm moms. Holle is among four other women chosen for their respective regions. Now, it's a fight for the national title.

Her son Dawson, admits he didn't think she'd be picked. He says he thinks people forget about North Dakota.

"She's awesome. And she is good for advice about calves," he says.

Both Holle and her husband, Andrew, want their children to follow in the family business. Making five generations of dairy farmers at Northern Lights Dairy Farm.

For Holle, farm life isn't all work and no play.

"We play like games, we cook, we make sugar cookies and sometimes clean my room together," says Holle's daughter Isabelle.

Andrew says his wife deserves this award. She took equine studies in college, while he studied farming. When they married, she managed to find her niche, and was still able to put her schooling to use by caring for the calves.

"She came in with her background on nutrition and animal health and really turned it around," says Andrew.  "From 30 percent plus death loss to a zero percent death loss today."

Holle wakes up early, cares for the calves, the kids and her home. Taking her children to and from school, after school activities and Andrew says she's been a great wife. The family agrees that she makes valuable contributions to the farm.
