Supermarket Sweeps

Posted: Updated:

A Minot supermarket transformed into a game show Tuesday morning when teams of two were running down aisles stuffing their carts with a variety of food. And, it's all for a great cause.

Local teams came together prepared to beat out the competition.

They were focused on collecting as many items as they could in order to put food on someone else's table.

"Raising money for the homeless, I can't think of a better way to spend my work day,” says Katie Steier a internet banking specialist at First Western Bank & Trust.

The idea was created to raise money and food for those who need it the most.

"The need in our community has really increased in the last few years. So, we wanted to be a part in helping keep those food pantries stocked,” says Jessica Henderson, the vice president of Young Professionals Network.

What better way to give back then by recreating the collection into an old game show? But, there were a couple of obstacles along the way.

"Some of them are handcuffed together. Some of them are wearing giant inflatables around their waist or holding them. So, to try and do all of that and try to get as close to $200 as possible makes it pretty tough,” says Henderson.

Steier and her partner were representing First Western and Trust while they pulled items from the shelf into their cart.

"We were running around like crazy,” says Steier.

They had just 10 minutes to pull items from their list, but when you are racing the clock, it could be a little overwhelming.

"The chocolate milk mix I couldn't find it anywhere. No, not chocolate milk, the mix, the mixed powder,” says Steier.

By the end of competition, it all came down to the numbers.

The team closest to $200 wins.

“I mean, the raising money part of it was great as well, and now we're here buying things for people who need it, it touches home, right here,” says Steier.

Even though only one team won, it’s really the community that wins for giving back.

This is the fifth year that the Minot Area Homeless Coalition, Marketplace Foods, and Our Family brand have teamed up to stock local food pantries. In previous years they've raised about $14,000. This year so far, they've collected about $4,000.
