Students Participate In Geek Week

Posted: Updated:

For about a month now, the library staff at Magic City Campus has been connecting with students finding out what their hobbies and interests are. And, on Monday, students were getting their "geek" on.

A group of juniors and seniors could be heard all throughout the library Monday morning as each one of them took their seat as pilot.

"What happens when they pick up the simulator? They find themselves getting deeply into flying a remote control airplane on a computer and the next thing you know, they find themselves lost really in it learning how to fly the controls of what the airplane does when you do this or that," says Steve Bueschel of the Minot Aircraft Modelers Club.

To celebrate National Library Month, students have been sharing what they are passionate and knowledgeable about all month long. And now, those interests are taking center stage this week.

"So, the idea behind it is to get students to identify and talk about things that they're passionate about, their hobbies, maybe a cause or a topic and then try to connect their interests to the library collection and then to also find other students in the building who share a similar interest," says John Scheeler a media specialist for the library.

To highlight what students "geek," Scheeler came up with Geek Week in the library to feature a variety of special interests among students.

"I just really appreciate that we can take time out of our day to incorporate everybody in the student body and, you know, just show all of our corks," says junior J’Kobe Wallace.

"I think kids are talking about it, for example, you hear the word geek being said every so often in the hall, and it's become sort of negative and is being turned into something positive, something that's fun, something that's interesting," says Scheeler.

For Wallace, he geeks aviation.

"It perplexes you, and it allows you the opportunity to kind of like dive into that topic and aspect,” Wallace says.

"All that noise is by the people revolving around the flight simulator. They're all talking about flying planes," says Bueschel.

Now, I'm going to attempt to fly a plane. We'll see how this actually works. I'm not too confident. You'll notice it doesn’t take long for me to crash the plane.

"This is a way to reach out to those students who don't typically like to come in who probably wouldn't think of coming into the library," says Scheeler.

As Geek Week continues, Scheeler hopes to continue to connect the library to students' needs one book at a time.

"This is a place where they can follow an interest, learning something new about what they care about," says Scheeler.

Geek Week is going on all week. Tuesday will be Geek Gaming Day where students will have the opportunity to play with video games, like Wii. After school, there will be a video game tournament.
