Author Shares Her Work With Standing Rock Students

Posted: Updated:
Learning the alphabet seems easier through association: A is for apple, B is for ball and so on. Author Roxane Solonen brought association a step closer to students, by writing her first children's book "P is for Peace Garden." It connects the letters with North Dakota's history. For example, C is for Capitol Building. Salonen read to students at Standing Rock Elementary School.

One student said after hearing Salonen started writing in the second grade, she's inspired to become a writer herself. Many of the children said they like everything.

Standing Rock students were attentive and all smiles during Salonen's presentation.

Some were so excited they needed a minute to think.

"My favorite one is "P is for Peace Garden,'' says student Beau Towcrow.

Salonen told them why she became an author, and why she chose to write about North Dakota.

Having grown up on a reservation herself. Salonen noticed there weren't many stories about North Dakota or Native Americans. She says the best way to encourage reading and writing is by connecting the story with to the audience.

"I think it's important for children to see themselves in stories," says Salonen. "When I was growing up, my Dad was an English teacher for a while, and he used to tell little stories and write little stories for my sister and I. The characters would have names that were similar to ours."

Her first book on the alphabet raised interesting questions.

"Do those big lizard beasts even eat the world's biggest shark canines? They probably can attack," says student Ian Baker.

Salonen also talked about her other book "First Salmon." The students seemed to like how the story revolved around Native American culture.

"It's kind of a step into their world. And maybe it gives them a little bit of hope for maybe something they might do. Maybe theres a write in here," says Salonen.

"I leaned today that being a writer of a book feels great. So, I'd write about rainbows and unicorns and butterflies," says student Noelle Luger.

At the end of the presentation, signed copies of "P is for Peace Garden" were given to teachers for their class.

The entire school got to meet Salonen, and each classroom got a chance to win her book in a classroom raffle.
