St. Vincent's Care Team Prepares For GABR

Posted: Updated:
The Century High School gym isn't big enough to accommodate everyone who wants to participate in Saturday's Great American Bike Race (GABR), a fundraiser for families of children with cerebral palsy and related conditions. It's limited to teams with 12 riders each. There are others participating elsewhere. For instance, there's a group of dedicated residents at the St. Vincent's Continuing Care Center. And they're already gearing up for the big race.

You won't find many members of this team riding the conventional stationary bike. But they'll do what their bodies allow them to.

"Do you know what to expect?"

"Sore arms and legs," says St. Vincent's resident Jack Anderson.

Anderson is on Team Vinny. He suffered a massive heart attack and stroke and was in a coma for five months. He finally awoke and is determined to move on in life.

"I'm alive, I'm here, I'm ready to go the hard route," says Anderson.

And among those who are participating, you'll manage to find a nun or two.

"Are people amused to see a sister on a bike?"

"They're amused to see me doing anything!" says Sister Anna Rose Ruthland for Team Vinny.

While the activity room won't be quite as loud as at the main event, there will still be a festive atmosphere here.

"This year, we're doing a superhero theme, so that will be fun. And there's family members, staff members come down. Residents who aren't participating, they come down and just watch and cheer along," says activity aide Allie Hanson.

"I think many of the residents that participate here have given in the past. And so it's part of their philosophy and part of their makeup. And so it's good that they can continue to do it," says Sister Ruthland.

And of course, you don't have to look far to hear some encouraging words.

"Do as much as you are capable of doing. Enjoy what you are doing. Just give it your all," says Sister Mary William Stadick for Team Vinny.

And that they have. Since Team Vinny was formed four-years-ago, members have raised more than $8,000.

While the typical GABR team has 12 riders, 15 residents at St. Vincent's are participating. And there are 12 more staff members joining in as well.
Be sure to join us Saturday at noon for a one-hour live special broadcast from the Great American Bike Race.
