The Best Time To Take A Photo

Posted: Updated:
Graduation ceremonies for the class of 2014 are almost here. One of the most popular and traditional ways to capture special occasions like these. That's not new. But what is fairly recent is the selfie craze.

Some school administrators have asked seniors not to take these photos during parts of the ceremony.

Dictionary dot com defines selfie as a picture taken of yourself with intent to put it on a social media website. Many  students agreed selfies could be a problem during graduation, but they doubt it'd get out of hand.

A Rhode Island college president had to tell students not to take selfies during the diploma hand off. Most would consider high school students less mature than college, and perhaps more willing to be silly, but their opinions on the topic were surprising.

Of these five seniors:  Rachel, Jessica, Grant, Johnathan and Harrison, only one thinks they'd like to take a selfie during graduation.

"For sure. It'd just be really fun, and it'd be a good memory to have. Taking a selfie at graduation," says Century student Grant Ehli.

Harrison Malloy "Isn't there someone else there that's going to do that? Isn't there a standing photographer planning to do that," says Century student Harrison Malloy.

"Yeah, but,  I have my parents to take my picture for that. And I'd rather take it all with my friends, says Century student Jessica Unruh.

Both Bismarck and Century High School principals were pleased to hear their students didn't need to be told not to take selfies. Not only does it slow down the process of passing out diplomas, there's a greater chance someone could fall.

"When they're lining up before they come into the Civic Center. That would be an appropriate time to take a picture of yourself. At the end of the ceremony when it's concluded," says Bismarck High student Michael Cary

"I can see why it would maybe get a little bit out of hand. Considering that there's a song to go along with it," says Bismarck High student Johnathan Wagoner.

"Not really, I don't take selfies mostly because I just don't think about it," says Century student Rachel Mahlum  I kinda live in the moments really."

I did manage to get one selfie with Rachel.

So, right now, there are no rules in place. However if a problem develops, that could change in the future.
