PSC Approves Basin Electric Transmission Line

Posted: Updated:
A transmission line that would bring energy to western North Dakota, is one step closer to putting poles in the ground.

The North Dakota Public Service Commission (PSC) approved Basin Electric's transmission line that would run from the companies Antelope Valley Power plant near Beulah to a substation near Tioga.

"Bottom line on this is, that this line is definitely needed. The electric load growth in western North Dakota is truly phenomena," says Curt Pearson, Basin Electric. "This line is needed to serve our electric systems, their customers from farmers and ranchers to the new stores, new hotels and of course the oil industry in Western North Dakota."

The decision from the PSC is just one of many that Basin Electric must get before starting construction. The federal NEPA process is a separate set of decisions, with no set deadline in sight.

The route of the transmission line presents several challenges in minimizing impact on the environment, as the corridor will pass through a portion of the Killdeer Battlefield.

"Ultimately, I think the alternative that they chose, and that we approved builds on an existing transmission corridor and road, a major road, through that very sensitive area so hopefully that minimizes the impact and also addresses these long term transmission needs in this region," says Julie Fedorchak of the N.D. Public Service Commission.

Basin Electric must now receive approval from the state Historical Society of North Dakota and the State Historic Preservation Office.
