Architects Give Sneak Peak At Jail Plans

Posted: Updated:
Architects and designers unveiled plans for the new Burleigh-Morton County Jail today.

The 213,000 square foot detention center could be expanded to hold a maximum of 1,000 beds. Sheriff Pat Heinert says with all the growth going on in the area both counties have overcrowded jails. And that's a public safety hazard. Members of the Chamber of Commerce say they knew what to expect and they are supportive even if the final cost caught them a bit off guard.

"In everybody's head is $50 million and they came back this morning with 70 million, but when you look at that number what you realize is that $50  million a couple years ago did not include such things as land preparation, the technology and these sorts of things. So, when you look at the total package and the changes, it does make some sense as to why that number went up," says Kelvin Hullet, the president of the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce.

Funding for the building would come from a half cent sales tax increase imposed by a home rule charter, which residents will vote on in June.
