How Dirty Is Your Money?

Posted: Updated:
What's green and white and filled with germs? Well, I'll give you a clue. We carry it around everyday.

Don't put your money where your mouth is, literally.

Researchers from New York University's dirty money project found that there are hundreds of bacteria lying all over our cash.

So, we hit the streets to see what some locals think about this dirty money.

"You think about all the hands that it goes into and drops on the ground; picks it up and hands it over to the next person. Money is dirty, very dirty,” says Kelli Seideman.

Most people we spoke to said it's not surprising because of how many hands those bills actually go through. Some even admitted that they're not even thinking about it.

"I'm sure I'm not the only one that sneezes into their hand and then goes and give a dollar or something,” says Arin Nowak.

A dollar bill lasts about 21 months. That's almost two years that these bills have been circulating around.

"I wouldn't even think about washing my hands before I have to hand money over. It would be great if people would, because then you wouldn't have to worry so much, but you don't think about it because you just do it everyday,” says Seideman.

Results from the study suggest that there were traces of pneumonia, food poisoning and much more. Germs are everywhere, and unfortunately you can't avoid them all. But, the best advice we can give you, is to wash between paying.
