Chamber Cleans Up For Earth Day

Posted: Updated:
Earth Day is an international celebration supporting the earth and starting tomorrow, people will be celebrating around the world. The Bismarck Mandan Youth Chamber has decided to get an early start to the festivities.

Bismarck Public Schools weren't in session today, but the young leaders gave up their day off to help better their community by raking leaves.

Bismarck Mandan Youth Chamber isn't spending their day hanging around the house.

They're actually hard at work.

"At our school we learn something, it's students-er-servant leadership," says Katy Rasmussen of  St. Mary's. "So, by being servants we can inspire others to lead."

The chamber is a group of high school juniors and seniors hand picked to meet up and think of ways to better the community.

With Earth day right around the corner, the students decided to take charge and help clean up Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park.

"I suppose everyday we should be focusing on the health of the earth in general because it where we live. But we figured we might at well devote a special day where we pay extra attention and give the earth a little service that it deserves," says Noah Germolus of Century.

"Fort Lincoln is kind of one of our hidden treasures in our area. You kind of want to spiff it up and make it look nice, because believe it our not we will have summer soon," says the program director of the Bis-Man Youth Chamber Sally Paulson .

The students say this was better than lounging around the house all day. Helping the community while bonding in casual clothes, something they don't normally do at their monthly meetings.

"There's nothing that you can ask them to do that they won't do. I mean they're just a wonderful group of young people I think we're pretty fortunate to have involved," says Paulson.

Paulson says she only regrets not being able to plant trees. Unfortunately, they didn't receive them in time. But she says the park is well raked.

Another let down was that not Mandan Chamber members helped, because some had a makeup snow day today.
