Bismarck Woman Competes For Miss Indian World

Posted: Updated:

A Bismarck woman is representing the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe at the Gathering of Nations Powwow. Danielle Finn will compete for the title of Miss Indian World.

Danielle Finn is going for the title of Miss Indian World.

"The pageant is a week long, and it's comprised of four events. It's the traditional talent presentation, the personal interview, the impromptu questions and a dance competition."

Finn will compete against 25 women from around the world, each representing their own tribes and traditions. She will perform the Lakota Fancy Shawl Dance. The shawl represents wings and flying.

"It's kind of our faster dance. And it's a shawl dance, so you're using your arms and your legs while you're dancing," says Finn.

Her traditional talent is archery. A skill that showcases the Lakota ways.

"That was their primary tool for protection, for warfare and for hunting. So, that was why I wanted to do it," says Finn.

When she's not competing, she's volunteering her time at a headstart program. And she's also a champion for change in education, which is her platform. She says if she wins, it will be easier to communicate on a global scale.

Winning would also give her a chance to travel the world.

Finn's mom says she has always been a positive role model.

"Even now, she still strives to do the right thing, to always do the best that she can, and always do everything in a positive way. To me, as a mother, I'm so proud of her. I mean, I can't ask for anything more," says Brenda Finn Danielle's mother.

The pageant kicks off on April 24.

The Miss Indian World pageant is a part of the most prominent Native American powwow in the world. The Gathering of Nations will be held in Albuquerque, N.M. April 24 through the 26.
