Health Department Issues Emergency Order

Posted: Updated:

When handling radioactive material it's important to follow proper protocol for health and safety reasons.

The North Dakota Department of Health has issued it's first emergency order in five years against Dyad Environmental's facility in Killdeer.

The company has a license to handle TENORM, which is technically enhanced, naturally occurring radioactive material. The facility usually handles byproducts from the oil industry like filter socks.

The department says, the company was not properly handling the waste, and providing an unsafe environment for workers. The company must now respond, and could reopen if it can address concerns.

Today, the Killdeer company is responding to the health department's shutdown on its Facebook page.

It reads:

"Dyad has made every effort to be compliant and has an excellent and efficient process more protective of the environment than any current waste disposal practice. Dyad is very concerned that the actions taken by the state were premature and have possibly damaged the reputation of the company. Nevertheless, Dyad will make every effort to be compliant to the letter of the law."
